Dear all,

I am receiving, and have on occasion have noticed for myself, persistent and regular comments about the fact that the British Fencing Safety Guidelines are not followed in clubs and in some cases by fencers when they present themselves at competitions.

I have, therefore attached for your information a copy of the British Fencing Guidelines which should be adhered to. If you have any doubts about interpretation of these rules then please do contact me when I will be only to happy to try to assist with clarification. In particular, I hear that some coaches do not bother to supply separate plastrons which are a must for all those using steel weapons and who have not been supplied with a jacket with an integrated plastron. I am also afraid that the Guidelines do not encompass such idiocies as wearing jackets back to front - a coach that I work with was visiting a holiday camp last year and whilst watching a taster session with both youngsters and adults taking part had cause to comment to the instructor that the jackets were all on back to front. He was advised that that was the way they were worn these days! Another common problem is supplying the wrong size blades to younger children. Again this aspect is covered in the Safety Guidelines.

Lastly as a former Trading Standards Officer I can advise that the loan of kit is likely to be deemed as 'supply' for the purposes of Consumer Safety legislation and as such should there be a problem because unsafe kit has been used then not only could a civil action ensue but there could also be a breach of the law which could result in a criminal prosecution.

Please try to ensure that the Guidelines are followed in your classes and clubs and I am sure then that you will have a happy, safe and productive environment with participants who are enjoying their activity.
